Cathy Dodgen was involved in the Virginia SAR system for nearly a decade as an instructor, state evaluator, and operational handler with her Wilderness Border Collie, Rusty, and her HRD dog, Bandit. Through the years, Cathy and her dogs have deployed to a variety of incidents throughout the Commonwealth and adjoining states including the Suffolk Tornadoes and Chesterfield building collapse. Cathy’s canine partners come to her through rescue organizations such as Blue Ridge Border Collie Rescue (www.brbcr.org) for whom she is a behavioral consultant and a behavioral rehab foster home. She uses positive, reward based methods in her obedience classes and behavior modification, and finds that those methods apply equally well to SAR work. She is currently working to transition her former Wilderness dog, Rusty, to HRD work for BARC. In Jan 2010, Cathy added a new addition to her SAR pack, a puppy named Dante to train as a HRD dog.
