Dog Heroes of September 11th

Donations from SAR Handlers to Air Force Military Working Dogs Deployed in War Zones

Jeff Bohn/Air Force courtesy photoIt started as a simple question, can I send care packages to the Air Force canines and their handlers deployed in war zones?  Currently there are roughly 290 canines serving in war zones.  From one handler to another, I wanted to say thank you.  With help from several AF members, including MSgt Armstrong and MSgt Capinas, those in the field were asked what items they could use and a list was created.    While the handlers deploy with required items for their canines, the harsh conditions take a toll on them and initial space didn't allow for extra 'niceties' such as extra toys.

Jeff Bohn/Air Force courtesy photoThe Wish List was sent to search & rescue (SAR) internet email lists with many handlers from across the US sending donated dog gear that was later distributed among troops in Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, and Kyrgyzstan.  Coalition morale and comfort was boasted by kind SAR strangers who contributed.  Shown in these pictures are handler Staff Sgt. Amy Nordstrom, 379th Expeditionary Security Forces with her K9 partner Aron wearing donated gear while serving in the Persian Gulf.

I would like to thank MSgt Armstrong and MSgt Capinas for helping make this project a reality!  Be Safe!

I also want to thank East Coast K9s in Delaware who donated a generous check that bought loads of donated dog gear!
