Washington (AP) -
Police spent Monday scouring an area near the C&O Canal in
Northwest Washington, one day after a passerby found human remains
there.
"It's just a lot of debris - a lot of rocks, a lot of sticks. It's hard
to get through," said dog handler Chris Hardy of Bay Area Recovery
Canines, a Maryland group which provides dogs trained to detect human
remains.
"At this point, no cause of death or anything like that has been
established, or even the sex, race and age" of the dead person, said
Cmdr. Robert Contee of the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police
Department. The city's medical examiner was working on those matters.
The remains were discovered by a jogger on Sunday, just days after bones
turned up nearby, in the area around Fletchers Boat House. Last month, a
skull was found in the same general area.
The grim findings had some people in the area concerned. Some joggers
opted to run in pairs, but others shrugged it off.
"I feel completely safe. I've never had anything even remotely
suspicious, so I feel quite comfortable," said jogger Sadie Mosley.
