Bay Area Recovery Canines (BARC) is a volunteer canine search and recovery organization dedicated to providing agencies with with highly trained canines and handlers to assist in the recovery of missing persons.

 

AKC CAR Grant

BARC received two generous grants from AKC Companion Animal Recovery (CAR) Canine Support & Relief Fund

 Thanks to the 2009 & 2011 grants awarded we have been able to purchase:

  1. Safety equipment for our canines: Chilly Vests, ice beds, and 12v vehicle fans

  2. Safety equipment for our handlers: swift water rescue life vests, foul weather rain gear. USAR/disaster helmets with lights

  3. Training equipment: a new scent pump system used to train for drownings

  4. Tracking devices used for searches: Garmin Astro units that track both the handler and the canines that aid in ensuring field coverage as well as leaving detailed maps for the agencies

  5. Public Relations equipment: two velcro display boards to use at PR events

  6. USAR safety helmets and special helmet lights (2011)

  7. Funds to send our members to outside seminars and certifications 

  8. Funds to host bringing in a law enforcement K9 instructor for a weekend seminar free to handlers from several teams
